  • Go to your library’s webpage OR the South Dakota State Library website at http://library.sd.gov
  • From your library’s webpage, either follow the links to the resource you want OR click on your library’s link to the South Dakota State Library website
    • If you log in through links on your library’s web page, follow the directions and use the barcode and password requested
  • From the South Dakota State Library website:
  • Click on the “A to Z complete listing of databases” or choose a category
  • Scroll though the list of electronic resources and:
  • You will see this pop-up screen:

  • If you have your own personal State Library ecard, select the South Dakota State Library from the CHOOSE YOUR LIBRARY HERE dropdown, enter barcode and PASSWORD IN ALL CAPS (usually your last name in all capital letters)

  • If your library does not participate in South Dakota Share-it, select South Dakota State Library (SDSIL) from the CHOOSE YOUR LIBRARY HERE dropdown, enter your local library’s ecard barcode and PASSWORD IN ALL CAPS. (If you do not have the library’s ecard information, please contact your local library).

  • For some libraries that are participating in South Dakota Share-it. In the login window, select your local library from the CHOOSE YOUR LIBRARY HERE dropdown, enter barcode(username) / password that you use to check out materials. (You may need to contact your library for the barcode/ password).

  • For other libraries that are participating in South Dakota Share-it; login using your local library’s ecard barcode and password. In the login window, select your local library from the CHOOSE YOUR LIBRARY HERE dropdown, enter barcode and PASSWORD IN ALL CAPS. (If you do not have the library’s ecard, please contact your local library).

  • This only applies to people accessing eresources from outside a library/school; and when using the State Library website, or URL links to the State Library that you have pasted onto your local webpage.
  • If your students/patrons currently access the eresources through a local proxy server, that process will remain the same and GeoIP will not apply to you at the moment.
  • Authentication will be done by using the local ip addresses, just like it authenticates inside a library or school.
  • The new GeoIP will not apply to ReferenceUSA; you will still need a State Library ecard to use this.
  • You will still need to tell the State Library of any changes to your local library’s ip addresses, just as you have in the past. Failure to do so may cause you to lose inside-library access, just as in the past.
  • If you live near a state border, you are more likely to see the "Allow this application to use your location?” inquiry and Share-it screens.
  • Please keep your local ecard barcode and password on file, though you might not have to share it with others like you have been in the past. The barcode/password will remain on record, and can always be used as a backup.

Here’s a little longer version of the login process:

  • User goes to the Electronic Resources A-Z page, or one of the category pages, and selects one of the resources.
    • Our software checks the user’s local computer’s ip address. If it matches the ip addresses on record with the SDSL, or in Share-it’s records as being located within South Dakota, they are able to click and enter any resource (this step is passive to the user). Just click and go!—this should happen for most people, and no further steps are needed.
    • If their ip is not recognized as being within South Dakota, you will be asked, "Allow this application to use your location?"
      • If the user selects Allow (recommended), and the browser determines they are within South Dakota, you can then enter the resource.
      • If the user selects Allow, and the browser determines they are not within South Dakota, you will be directed to the SHAREit login screen.
      • If the user selects Deny, you will be sent to the SHAREit login screen.

Select your library from the dropdown list, enter your barcode and password on the SHAREit login screen as you have in the past.
