Library Technology

We have compiled a list of standard pieces of technology most public libraries have to provide appropriate technology and internet access to their patrons.  This is not a comprehensive list of all technologies that every public library will need, nor is it a set list that you have to follow.  Rather, this is a guide to help libraries find what types of technology they might want to incorporate into their systems.  The technology listed below allows more patrons to access your library and utilize the tools of technology and the internet.

When considering what technology your library needs, keep in mind the unique needs of your community as well.  Talk to your school district, city and community leaders, and patrons to help determine what technology the library could offer that would best support your community.

  • Staff computer(s) - desktop or laptop
  • Patron computer(s) - desktop or laptop
  • Additional computer monitors
  • Printer
  • Scanner (printers often have built-in document scanners)
  • Wireless internet available to patrons

Technology is an exciting, ever-changing field.  As we look toward the future of technology in libraries, there are a few trends that jump out.  The list below is not comprehensive of all emerging technology, but it gives a good idea of technology that is likely to be included in many libraries in the future.  You may also notice that your library already has some of the items on this list!

If you are wondering what emerging technology to add to your library, consider the following questions:

  • What are the unique needs of your community that technology could serve?
  • What types of technology are you and your staff interested in?
  • What kinds of technology do your patrons typically use or ask for?
  • What will spark the imagination of the library staff, patrons, and overall community?

Your answers can help you determine what types of technology to add to your library.
